        Winery Notes:
Since the first release in 2003, this wine has been an excellent introduction to the Prophet’s Rock house style and site driven approach to Pinot Noir.

The grapes from this low-yielding vintage were handpicked, wild-fermented in small lots and aged in French oak barrels for 10 months. Always a very perfumed Pinot Noir, this wine has fine tannins and an elegant profile making it a great food wine and a great candidate for further cellaring.

Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2021

        Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"The Willows has been our home since 1845, when `JG` Scholz first arrived in the Barossa. Seven generations on, we continue to farm our unique parcel of land in the Barossa.

Dense crimson in the glass, our Shiraz shows aromatics of berry fruits, a touch of dark chocolate and earth with hints of sweet spice. Soft and velvety on the palate, the dark fruits intensify to reveal great depth of flavour. The wines generosity is neatly framed with soft, ripe tannins that lend great length and structure to the wine."

        92/100 James Halliday's Wine Companion (2018 Vintage)
"Boasts a lifted floral nose evocative of a cooler zone than the Barossa. The colour too….is vital mid ruby. Blueberry, smoked backstrap, aniseed and briar skirt, along rails of juicy acidity and fine boned tannins. The oak is buried. This is a delicious and elegant wine, offering solid value."

      • Pirramimma McLaren Vale Petit Verdot 2017 $34.00 $29.00

Winemaker’s Notes The exceptional 2017 vintage provided us outstanding fruit quality, great colour, varietal character, ripe tannins and length of flavour. For this our twenty second Petit Verdot release we selected fruit from the Siberia, Eric’s, OTC, Jones and Katunga vineyards, each block providing its own distinctive profile. The wine has a lifted bouquet of black cherry, violets, pink plum and musk, enhanced by hints of cedary oak. With the concentrated palate exhibiting spicy blackberry, boysenberry, red currant and tangy Morello cherry, complemented by hints of Kalamata olive. The fine grain textured tannins, subtle oak and savoury varietal flavours are beautifully integrated in a long-sustained finish. Geoff Johnston
      • Seifried Nelson Zweigelt 2019 $22.00 $20.00
The Zweigelt is a red grape variety originating in Hermann’s homeland of Austria. It is a favourite at Seifried family gatherings. Our Brightwater vineyard has just 11 rows, totalling less than one hectare of Zweigelt vines.
Zweigelt has full round berries and bunches, with rich purple skin and intense fruit flavours. The grapes were de-stemmed and fermented on their skins, and hand plunged twice a day. Following fermentation, the wine was gently pressed from the skins and transferred to a mixture of new and three year old French oak barriques. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation and remained in barrel for 12 months.  The wine was racked from the barrel in May 2020.
The 2019 Seifried Zweigelt comes from the outstanding hot, dry growing season we enjoyed in Nelson during 2018 - 2019. The wine has a deep dark red tone with dense dark fruit aromas. The palate has a rich fruit weight with dark plums, Christmas cake and mocha flavours. Tannins are generous and well proportioned with the succulent fruit weight. One to savour!

    • Quaffers from South of France -2 of each $302.00 $265.00
The Languedoc and its southern neighbour the Roussillon, share a mountainous terrain where fortified hilltop towns and abbey ruins look out for the vast sea of vines.
Over 245,000 hectares, the region is now thought to be one of the most interesting and dynamic wine areas in the world. Passionate wine makers often from the "New World" are experimenting with exciting combinations of grape varieties. Not being one of France's prestigious wine regions, Languedoc-Roussillon has fewer traditions to respect than say Bordeaux or Burgundy. So the wine growers here tend to be more innovative and less formal creating great subtle and complex wines. It's more about fun and less about rules.
Often the wines from this region are over looked. I'm offering you a mixed case of some very easy drinking wines from the region.

    • Lochiel Estate Mangawhai The Laird Fortified Dessert wine $35.00 $29.00

'The Laird'. This is a fortified Desert Wine made from Malbec grapes.  this is fortified wine made as fortified wine and has been matured in old American oak for 15 months.

Deep purple crimson in colour, bright and opaque, it's spicy, rich, plummy and just a little spirituous on the nose. The flavour is just gorgeous - it is rich, weighty, bright-fruited and expansive with a slight mintiness, deep purple fruit, subtle oak and smooth, satin-sheet tannins. There's no overt spirit flavour at all although there is alcoholic lift and warmth to the finish, which leaves a warm minty sensation, the aftertaste that reminds me of Cadbury's Old Gold dark chocolate with raspberry chips. The wine has 17% alcohol by volume and 500ml-sized bottle
    • Krohn Porto Ambassadeur Rich Ruby $40.00 $35.00

A stylish fruity nose which is full of intense and concentrated blackcurrant and cherry aromas. Full bodied and firm, the palate is crammed with luscious black fruit flavours. The wine has good weight and structure with a fine finish.

Ruby Ports, like Late Bottle Vintage (LBV), have rich colour and body, a fine aroma and taste. Their fruit character will range from bright, fresh red fruits in younger rubies to darker, mellow fruit .

Ruby port, with its firm tannins and concentrated fruitiness, is the style most suited for the classic port and cheese combination. It is particularly good with blue-veined and richly flavoured soft cheeses. It is also delicious with bitter chocolate.

Press Review: “Smells like a handful of currants, with a good whack of spice. On the palate, it’s a very winey Port, with a big rush of fruit up front, backed up by a spicy, nutty finish. Well balanced and with good weight, a well considered all-rounder (Hospitality, August 2011, New Zealand).
    • Krohn Porto "Quinta do Retiro Novo 2009 $95.00

“Aroma with a vegetal character and chemical notes, allied to ripe fruit and jam. Full and sweet in the mouth, with firm but round tannins.Ready to be drunk now.” 16/20 (Revista de Vinhos, Jan 2008). Recommended drinking temperature Moderate room temperature.

Food matching notes Combine this Vintage with Steak au Poivre or take it after meal with cheese, tarts, pies, cakes and berries.
    • Krohn Port Vintage 2016 $130.00

Tasting Notes: Deep ruby black with narrow purple rim. A nose of wonderfully pure, vibrant red fruit, with crisp aromas of cranberry, raspberry and cherry and lively notes of plum and apricot. Emerging in turn from behind this curtain of fresh fruit are spicy aromas of black pepper and nutmeg, warm notes of mocha and scents of cedar wood and balsamic herbs. In contrast, the palate is voluptuous, with dense, mouth filling tannins providing both body and firmness and a thick coulis of black woodland fruit that flows into the endless finish. Although the first impression is of an ethereal purity, the wine develops an intricate complexity in the glass and displays the powerful but beautifully integrated tannins which are a hallmark of the vintage

Serving suggetions:Walnuts are an excellent accompaniment to Vintage Port, as are various cheeses such as Stilton and Dorset Blue Vinny. So too are dried fruits such as apricots or figs. Alternatively, simply savour the unadulterated taste in a good glass with good company

    • Vin Alto Vin Santo 2005 $40.00 $25.00 $25.00

The name Vin Santo translates to 'Holy Wine' as it was traditionally the wine used at Communion. It is a dessert wine made from Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay grapes. The grapes are set out to dry on racks for up to three months and when their juices are reduced to syrup, the must is fermented for some years in barrels. The drying process concentrates the grape sugars and gives the wine its distinctive flavour, complexity and elegance. It is a pale golden wine with a bouquet reminiscent of white flowers and honey. It is full bodied and sweet with the balanced acidity and long-lasting finish characteristic of a superior dessert wine. It has tropical fruit flavours of pineapple, guava and lychee, with a honeyed and nutty finish. Vin Santo is delicious served after the meal with biscotti or paneforte. Italians traditionally dip cantucci almond biscuits into the wine.

    • Coopers Gold 2017 $21.00 $16.00 $16.00

      Winemakers Notes
In 2017 we again targeted Delwyn and Doug Bell’s Clone 548 Chardonnay to make our Coopers Gold. The fruit was in beautiful condition and picked ripe. We then freeze concentrated a portion of the juice up to almost 30 Brix. Fermentation was in tank and we stopped the ferment when the acid/sugar/alcohol balance seemed correct. This has given us a residual sugar of just over 100g/L. We made a wine in this style in 2004 and this wine surprised and delighted us by aging gracefully for 10 years. We are hopeful that our 2017 version will behave in a similar fashion!

As with most dessert wines Coopers Gold will gain further complexity with careful cellaring.

      Food Matches
Probably best suited to rich, luscious desserts. A dessert, which included stone fruits, vanilla and honey would certainly match the flavours and aromas. Try Crème Brulee!

      Suggested Wine List Description
